Quote for the New Year: “And suddenly you know: It’s time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings.” — Meister Eckhart

Hello and happy new year, PlayWrite friends and family—Gong Xi Fa Cai! ! Let’s celebrate PlayWrite’s 2023 highlights:

Our first workshop with Helensview School

We did our first workshop with Helensview School this fall. Helensview delivers individualized instruction and specialized support services for youth ages 12-21 who have dropped out of school or who are experiencing chronic attendance/behavioral issues. Here are a few shots from this workshop:

New coach Angela Van Epps and long-time coach Cecily Overman read Anastasia's script. This lets the student hear how their characters and dialogue are landing and decide whether to revise.. Photo by Aimee Farr.

June 2023: We produced our first 24-Hour Play Festival

This event brought together eight local playwrights, eight directors, and 22 actors to write, direct and perform eight new short plays—all in 24 hours.

Below: Diva Poison Waters, our emcee, shares a laugh with our judges, Beth Harper (The Actors Conservatory), David Koff (Change Through Play), and Nik Whitcomb (Bag&Baggage).

Note: This production didn’t involve the students we work with, or their plays. Our goal was to get the public and the theatre community more involved with PlayWrite; it worked! We’re now in the early planning stages for a showcase of recent student works. Stay tuned for details!
